Heading to the north of England soon? Manchester might surprise you with some fantastic free days out.

It may not get the weather, but Manchester's got more than it's share of things to keep everyone occupied. Here's our top five things to do in the Cottonopolis that won't have you reaching for your wallet.

1. Visit the Museum of Science and Industry

Known locally as the MOSI, the Museum of Science and Industry is dedicated to championing the city's industrial and scientific achievements, all housed in a magnificent old train station.

2. Explore the Northern Quarter

The Northern Quarter is a all about independent businesses. With bars, restaurants, boutique shops and an arts and craft centre, there's something to satisfy even the most difficult to please.

3. Take a walk in the park

Manchester is blessed with plenty of green space. Whether it's Chorlton Water Park, Heaton Park or one of the many open spaces in the city centre, you'll find plenty of spots to lose a few hours away from the hustle and bustle of city life.

4. Go the the gallery

Housed in a beautiful Grade 1 listed building, Manchester Art Gallery has a permanent collection of work with local and international significance, as well as changing exhibitions throughout the year.

5. Read in the John Rylands

Recently renovated, the John Rylands library is housed in a fabulous neo-Gothic building right in the city centre. It has exhibitions running throughout the year, as well as a magnificent historic reading room on the third floor.

Of course, the best thing about being in a new city is discovering things for yourself. Manchester is steeped in history and culture, and you can enjoy it without spending a penny!
